We bought a house!

By

You read that right. We bought a house. A 147-year-old former farmhouse with floors that slope, support beams in the basement I don’t like to spend too long thinking about, and a wood burning stove that I’m afraid to light for fear of burning the house down.

It still feels surreal to say we’re homeowners. We’ve taken many walks with our dogs down these streets, dreaming of one day owning our own home and piece of history. This house was on our typical morning walk loop and when it went for sale we thought surely we don’t have a chance. Luckily for us, God had other plans! It had charm and quirks, the cutest button light switches, and, best of all, a fenced in yard for our dogs, Miley & Murph.

It has a new roof and siding, which sealed the deal for my husband who works in insurance, but we bought it knowing it needed some work- maybe more than we fully understood at the time. (Let’s just say we’ve already met the plumber, the electrician, some waterproofing experts, and a shop on Etsy that sells vintage fixtures.)

This blog will be part renovation diary, part house history project, and part love letter to the life we’re building here- creaky floors and all.

We’re learning as we go, figuring out what’s original, and we’re falling in love with the house a little more every time we discover something new.

I named this blog Still Settling because that’s what the house is doing, literally, and what we’re doing, too. Settling into a new rhythm. Settling into ownership. Settling into a place that feels like ours, even as it continues to shift beneath our feet.

Thanks for being here. Let’s see where this goes.
